The Seas and the Harbour

They kept saying that there were many fish in the sea
not understanding
that she didn’t want to catch fishes

She longed to catch the ocean itself

They said no one could do it

But one day she finally found him
and it turned out that he wasn’t a fish at all
He was a conch
That’s why his breath sounded like the sea.

“Can too!” she said
“Yes, I could catch the ocean!”

***
He was not like other men
For he was never a foreign country
or an exotic taste

When she hugged him
she felt like a fish
being released into the ocean
after having fought so long for its life
in the black sand
that it has forgotten
what it means to be home

And when she realised
that he never meant to catch her
but to be the ocean to her

she was overcome with relief
deeper than joy

***

She is lying with her head on his chest
the movement like waves

"This is just like being out on a boat,” she says
“Yes, my love,” he replies
“I will sail you to a safe harbour.”

And with his heartbeat in her ears
she knows that now the seas and the harbour
have become one

Höfin og höfnin

Þau sögðu að að væru margir fiskar í sjónum
skildu ekki að hana langaði ekkert að veiða fiska
Hún þráði að veiða sjálft hafið

Þau sögðu að það væri ekki hægt

En dag einn fann hún hann loksins
og þá var hann alls ekki fiskur
Hann var kuðungur
Þess vegna hljómaði andardráttur hans
eins og hafið

„Víst gat ég veitt hafið“ sagði hún

***

Hann var ekki eins og aðrir menn
Hann var aldrei framandi land
eða ókunnugt bragð.

Þegar hún faðmaði hann
leið henni eins og fiski
sem er sleppt út í hafið
eftir að hafa barist svo lengi um
í svarta sandinum
að hann er búinn að gleyma
hvað það er að vera heima.

Og þegar hún skildi
að hann hafði aldrei ætlað að veiða hana
heldur vera henni hafið

helltist yfir hana léttir
dýpri en öll gleði

***
