lyrics

Wrong note

And when the harp strings
made from severed vocal cords
sound through the auditorium
the silencing of the ages breaks.

A woman stands up from the audience
She is holding a sign:
“This is my voice. I want it back.”

A murmur goes through the hall:
“Is that not the Roma woman
who used to sing outside the train station?”

She walks up on the stage,
pushes the harpist away
and tries to play the strings
of her own voice.

The audience burst into laughter
for she never learned to play the harp
And while the tears roll down her cheeks
she carries the harp away
like a cross.

Then the flutes remember the birds
that used to sing in them
while they were still branches

And they begin to wander off key,
far off into the vanished woods
to sing their old song

Outside the woman hears the flutes
sounding like birds.

And she promises herself to practice
as much as she can

until the strings become her own
once more

______

Feilnóta

Og þegar hörpustrengir
úr sundurskornum raddböndum
óma um salinn
brestur þöggun aldanna

Kona á áhorfendabekk stendur upp
Hún heldur á skilti:
“Þetta er röddin mín. Ég vil fá hana aftur.”

Kliður fer um salinn:
“Er þetta ekki Rómakonan
sem söng fyrir utan lestarstöðina?”

Hún gengur upp á sviðið,
ýtir hörpuleikaranum frá,
og reynir að leika á strengi
sinnar eigin raddar.

Áhorfendur bresta í hlátur,
því hún lærði aldrei að spila á hörpu.
Og meðan tárin renna niður kinnarnar
ber hún hörpuna burt
eins og kross.

Þá minnast flauturnar fugla
sem sungu í þeim
þegar þær voru enn greinar

Og þær fara út af laginu
lengst inn í horfinn skóg
að syngja gamla sönginn sinn

Fyrir utan heyrir konan flauturnar
hljóma eins og fugla.

Og hún lofar sér að æfa sig
eins mikið og hún getur

þar til strengirnir verða aftur
hennar eigin.
